On March 22, Kyiv hosted a meeting “Situational Analysis of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Ukraine: Challenges and Solutions”. Representatives of 20 organizations from 9 regions of Ukraine took part in the discussion of the situation in the field of the rights of people with disabilities. Following the discussion, the most important priority areas of activity in the field of the rights of people with disabilities were identified: adaptation of Ukrainian legislation to international law and ensuring comprehensive accessibility in society. This was reported by Daria Sydorenko, executive director of The League of the Strong public union.
“Ukraine is obliged to take all necessary measures to ensure the protection and safety of people with disabilities, especially in situations of risk. This can only be ensured through a joint dialogue between the government, civil society and international organizations working to ensure the rights of people with disabilities. During public events, we voice the problems that people with disabilities have to deal with. And it is in the discussion through the prism of our own experience that proposals emerge that are then implemented,” said Daria Sydorenko, executive director of The League of the Strong NGO.
The participants interacted in groups in the form of an open discussion about the challenges faced by people with disabilities, their families and organizations representing their interests. They identified the gaps that exist in this area in Ukraine through the prism of their own experience and best practices. They also offered their own vision of how these challenges can be overcome.
The discussion was also attended by representatives of the United Nations in Ukraine, who presented the organization’s activities in the field of ensuring the rights of people with disabilities.
As a result of the meeting, the participants identified priority areas of activity in the field of the rights of people with disabilities. In particular, these include the adaptation of Ukrainian legislation to international law and ensuring comprehensive accessibility in society.
The discussion was attended by 20 organizations representing people with disabilities from 9 regions of Ukraine: Kyiv, Cherkasy, Chernivtsi, Odesa, Kharkiv, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Ternopil regions.
