In three weeks, “The League of the Strong” received nearly two thousand requests for support for people with disabilities

In three weeks, “The League of the Strong” has received over one and a half thousand enquiries about its new project to support people with disabilities. This was announced by Bohdan Kokhan, head of the ‘League of the Strong’ project office.

“We received the highest number of applications from the Kharkiv region — 991. And the majority were seeking financial assistance for medical treatment — 1,081 applications from five regions, with the Kharkiv region again in first place. We can already see that the number of applications exceeds the amount of aid allocated to the project. This highlights how pressing this issue is in Ukraine at the moment,” said Bohdan Kokhan, head of “The League of the Strong” project office.

As a reminder, in mid-June, a new large-scale support project for people with disabilities was launched in Ukraine: “Comprehensive services to protect civilians affected by hostilities and improve the resilience skills of first responders”. Support will be available to adults and children with disabilities, families of people with disabilities, and internally displaced persons with disabilities from the Kharkiv, Poltava, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv and Odesa regions.

In total, as part of this project, the “The League of the Strong” had received 1,946 requests for assistance from various individuals in the Kharkiv, Poltava, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv and Odesa regions as of 7 July 2026. In total, there were 310 requests for financial assistance with rent, 1,081 for medicines, 143 for assistive devices, and 544 for winter preparedness and energy support.

The number of aid recipients will be limited by the project’s terms and conditions. Consequently, project participants will receive assistive devices to aid mobility, communication and independent daily living, as well as financial assistance for medical treatment. The funds may be used for medicines, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, diagnostics, small medical equipment, dental services and other medical needs, depending on the individual’s specific circumstances.

In addition, 200 families will be provided with portable power stations to improve their resilience during prolonged power cuts. Those affected by the winter energy crisis are eligible for this form of assistance, particularly those including people with disabilities who are in critical need of energy support.

A separate strand of the project is dedicated to mental health support. Up to 75 people will be able to receive up to five individual counselling sessions with a psychologist, whilst a further 70 participants will take part in group-based psychological support sessions. Thematic support groups will focus on issues such as adapting to life after displacement, recovering from trauma and raising children with disabilities.

In addition, the project provides other forms of assistance. In particular, four families will receive support to cover their rent for four months.

The needs assessment is ongoing — but exclusively in the Odesa region. The form can be completed here: https://ee-eu.kobotoolbox.org/x/xR85Ptlf
