Experts of the public union “The League of the Strong” conducted trainings “Communication and Diversity. Accessibility of Cultural Services” for 50 heads of municipal cultural institutions in Kyiv. The training was held in cooperation with the Kyiv City State Administration. They worked on the issue of accessibility in the cultural sphere of the capital. This was reported by Olha Hvozdyk, head of the advocacy department of “The League of the Strong” public union.
The training covered the basics of ethics of communication with different groups of people, correct terminology and understanding of people’s needs, accessibility of information for visitors to cultural institutions, audio description and sign language.
“When we talk about barrier-free access, we primarily think of the essentials: healthcare, transportation, and infrastructure. However, social and civic accessibility is no less important. Such barrier-free training will help professionals to adapt cultural spaces for all people without exception,” said Maryna Honda, Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration for Self-Governance and responsible for barrier-free access in Kyiv.
In total, 50 cultural leaders of the capital were trained as part of the training.
As a reminder, the League of the Strong public union has already conducted a barrier-free course for 150 employees of the Kyiv City State Administration and municipal enterprises of the capital. The course was aimed at teaching officials and employees of public utilities how to make city facilities accessible to people with disabilities.
