Trainings on “Architectural Requirements and Solutions for Ensuring Physical Barrier-Free Cities” were held in Cherkasy, Ternopil, and Ivano-Frankivsk. The training was organized by the public union “League of the Strong”. Representatives of local authorities joined them. This was reported by Daria Sydorenko, executive director of the League of the Strong public union.
“Accessibility of city buildings for people with disabilities is still a painful issue. We realize that most of the new or renovated public buildings do not meet accessibility standards. Local governments should constantly monitor such facilities and reflect the need for improvement in city target programs. And accordingly, they should allocate funds for the arrangement of such buildings,” said Daria Sydorenko, Executive Director of The League of the Strong NGO.
The training was attended by deputy mayors and advisors, directors of architecture, health, culture and sports departments. Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk held live trainings. Cherkasy joined the training online. The focus of the meetings was on accessibility for people with disabilities in hospitals, social protection departments, services, etc. They talked about the national barrier-free strategy and its implementation on the ground.
The course participants improved their knowledge of the regulatory framework that governs the creation of barrier-free space in Ukraine. They learned about important architectural requirements and mastered new solutions to ensure the physical accessibility of facilities.
The event was held as part of the Empower Ukraine project, which was created with the financial support of the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO), CBM, and the European Forum for Persons with Disabilities.
