On March 8, the League of the Strong will launch a accessible course for employees of the Kyiv City State Administration and municipal enterprises of the capital. This is one of the areas of work agreed upon at a meeting with Maryna Honda, Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration for Self-Governance. This was reported by Daria Sydorenko, executive director of the League of the Strong public union.
“We continue to work with communities. Local authorities should understand how to make facilities accessible to people with disabilities. The training course that starts in Kyiv is an important step. It will help to implement accessibility in the capital of Ukraine,” – said Daria Sydorenko, Executive Director of The League of the Strong NGO.
As part of the cooperation, it is also expected that the League of the Strong experts will contribute to the preparation of strategies, in particular, the communication strategy on barrier-free accessibility being developed by the KCSA. They will analyze the documentation of reconstruction projects. Separate work is also planned with representatives of the fields of transportation, architecture, education, culture, sports, and healthcare.
“The course aims to teach officials and employees of public utilities how to make city facilities accessible to people with disabilities. Changes should start with an understanding of inclusiveness and accessible standards. So that all the knowledge can be used in the real world,” said Olha Hvozdyk, an advocate at The League of the Strong NGO.
The accessible training course was developed as part of the Center of Expertise in the field of the rights of people with disabilities project.
Earlier, the League of the Strong developed a checklist on accessibility, which was received by more than 100 communities.
The Center of Expertise on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities of the League of the Strong public union began its work in 2023. The key goal of its work is to provide expertise to local governments in their work on strategic documents governing the reconstruction and development of communities in terms of inclusiveness, barrier-free accessibility and ensuring the rights of people with disabilities.
